Music Notes
With
the Adult Choir now growing to twenty strong, we are in full rehearsals
preparing for the
Lenten and Easter Seasons of the Church Year.
During our six weeks of Lent
this year, the season of our Lord’s Passion, the choir will be singing
some newly written music prepared especially for this church year. This is
new music set to
familiar hymn tunes, with all texts based upon Lectionary passages for Ash
Wednesday
and for each Sunday. The musical emphasis / themes for each succeeding
week run like this:
Ash Wednesday – Prayer for Mercy (Psalm 51),
and Seeking Peace (2 Corinthians 5);
Jesus 40 days in the Wilderness and Temptation (Luke 4);
Jesus beginning his journey to Jerusalem (Luke 13);
Thirsting for God (Isaiah 55;Psalm 63; and 1 Corinthians 10) ;
The New Creation (2 Corinthians 5; Luke 15);
The Costly Gift – the washing of Jesus feet (John 12); and finally
God as Refuge and God’s faithfulness (Psalm 31).
These hymns are all composed
by David Gambrell, Associate for Worship PC(USA).
This music takes us through Lent ending with Palm Sunday where we will be
celebrating
Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem. Then, we enter Holy Week where, in some
traditions,
each day would have a special, sacred service.
We will be celebrating with
a very special service for the evening of Maundy Thursday.
(The word, “Maundy,” refers to “Command” for this night Jesus gave his
disciples
a New Commandment – “to love one another”.) This worship service will be
similar to our
Christmas Eve Service of Lessons and Carols and we will be celebrating
with Scripture Readings
and Music that will walk us through the last days of Jesus’ life -
beginning with Jesus washing
the disciples’ feet, the first Lord’s Supper and then Jesus’ walk to the
Crucifixion.
We will be celebrating Holy Communion on this Thursday evening and we will
be celebrating
with Candles – in the reverse order from Christmas – where candles will be
taken
out as we walk through the story of Jesus’ Passion.
Then, on Easter Day, we
celebrate the Resurrection of Jesus with great fanfares, and joyful sounds
as we recognize the inevitable fact that Jesus even conquered death.
We celebrate life renewed and always renewing.
If you would
like to join our Choir in singing during this very special Lenten and Easter
season,
please contact Pastor Virginia Martin.
Rehearsals will be each Thursday beginning at 6:30 PM.
